Kalamata olives
Everything about the Kalamata olive
The Kalamata olive variety
The dark Kalamata olives, also called Kalamon, originally come from the area around Kalamata in Messenia on the Greek Peloponnese peninsula.
The growing areas
Kalamata olives are considered the most popular olive variety worldwide. They are now cultivated in many areas of Europe and even in South America.
Only olives from the Messenia region may bear the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO / POD) Kalamata Olive.
Our Kalamata olives come from different regions in Greece.
The color
The ripe Kalamata olive has a violet-dark brown, almost black color on the tree. After debittering in brine, the brown color predominates.
By the way:
Completely dark black olives do not naturally exist. Black olives are usually colored - easily recognizable by their black core. Uncolored olives have a light core.
