The Kalamata olive variety
The dark Kalamata olives, also called Kalamon, come originally
from the area around Kalamata in Messenia on the Greek peninsula
Peloponnese. They are brown-purple when ripe and are one of the large olives.
The addition
The Kalamon variety is the most popular olive variety worldwide. Kalamata olives are now cultivated in many areas of Europe and even South America.
But only Kalamata olives that were grown in the Messinia/Greece region are allowed to bear the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO / POD) Kalamata Olive.
Our Kalamon olives come from different regions, but all from Greece.
How do you recognize the Kalamon olive?
The ripe Kalamata olive has a violet-dark brown color on the tree, almost
black color. After debittering in brine, the brown predominates
Hue.
By the way: There are no naturally completely dark black olives. Black olives are usually colored - easily recognizable by their black core.
Uncolored olives like our Kalamata olives have a light core.
